The Worship Service

We use the historic liturgy of the church, singing hymns to the accompaniment of organ.  This is where we are fed by the Gospel of Christ, receiving forgiveness for our sins through Word and Sacrament and then propelled into our vocations with that Good News of Jesus Christ.  The Lord's Supper is celebrated the 1st and 3rd Sundays and other feast days.  We request that you read the information in the worship folder regarding this practice before communing.  If you are not communing with us, there is ample time to devote yourself to prayer - either quietly or through the communion hymns that have been chosen for the week.

On days when the Lord's Supper is not celebrated, we join together for the service of 'Matins' in the morning or 'Vespers' in the evening.

We love receiving God’s gifts alongside children of all ages.  Should you like to use it, we have a 'cry room' on the front left of the sanctuary for your convenience.  However, it is unstaffed in order to encourage participation by children of all ages.

At both entrances to the sanctuary (where the service is held) there will be a stack of bulletins or an usher will hand you one. This is used in conjunction with our hymnal, directing you to the page numbers and hymns for the morning.  Children's activity sheets are also available. Usually there is someone greeting people at the door, and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

There will be directions from the pastor about sitting or standing at different times during the service. You will not be asked to stand up or identify yourself as a visitor. But we would like for you to fill out our welcome card in the pew and drop it in the offering plate as it comes by.

If you have other questions, please feel free to ask anyone you see, or contact the church.

Christian Education Hour

Christian Education Hour at Emmaus is conducted from 10:45-11:45. For children pre-k through grade six Sunday School is offered. Bible Classes are offered for Jr. High and Sr. High Youth. Adults are offered at least one Bible Class during this hour. Topics for Bible Class include not only Biblical topics, but other theological topics and current world topics taught by the Pastor.

Parking and Entering

Parking

We have a large parking lot on the north side of the building. It is the big fenced area, accessed by the alley. For the time being, you may also park across from the playground in the corner lot on 32nd and Irving or along the adjacent streets (note: if you're parking on the street, please read the signs, especially during the middle of the week).

Entering

Main entrance to church: There are three doors on Irving that lead to the back of the sanctuary (where the worship service is held).

Barrier-free entrance: At the 31st Street entrance of the building there are no steps to negotiate if you take the ramp (south side of the building).

West door: From Irving -- the double set of glass doors leads to the stairs that go to the church offices and the narthex. If you are coming to see a staff member, this is the best door to use because it has a buzzer and camera. It is unlocked on Sundays.

Getting Around the Building

The sanctuary, where worship services are held, is on the second floor. You can enter the back of the sanctuary through the double doors in the lobby (narthex).

For activities other than worship, there are classrooms on the main level where the following school classes are held: 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6. The Kindergarten, Pre-school, 7/8 classroom, music/science classroom, conference room and staff room are located on the lower level of the education building. The kitchen, and Lunch Room are in the basement (lower level) of the church building. The Secretary's office, Pastor's Study and the Principal's office are located on the second floor off the church lobby (double glass doors).

If you have a little trouble with stairs, we have a chair-lift that can be operated on Sunday mornings.  Please speak with an usher about this possibility.

Restrooms

There is a men's and women's restroom off the church lobby. There are also bathrooms located in the hallway on the second floor, on the way to the offices and another set underneath the narthex, adjacent to the fellowship hall downstairs.
