Historical Highlights of Emmaus


July, 1907. Emmaus congregation is formed on July 3rd. First worship services in Woodman of the World Hall. Sunday School, Ladies' Aid and Young People's Society start.

November, 1907. In only five months, sufficient gifts were received to purchase land and erect and dedicate auditorium-type building as a church edifice at West 31st Ave. and Irving Street. (This structure was torn down in 1951 to make way for the present church.)

1908. Emmaus Lutheran School starts with classes in new church building. First teacher - Mr. George Riekenburg.

June 9, 1912. A new larger church edifice is dedicated to take care of the rapidly growing congregation. Emmaus members worshiped in this facility for 40 years.

January 20, 1929. A new, larger school building is dedicated.

1944. Emmaus establishes a mission which later became Faith Lutheran Church, in the Federal Boulevard and W. 46th Avenue area. By October 8, 1944, Emmaus has built a church edifice and turned the entire property over to the new congregation - debt free.

December 17, 1946. Emmaus Mission Guild starts.

May 15, 1948. Emmaus radio ministry starts with a live broadcast of Mothers' Day Service.

1952. A new church building for Emmaus with a much larger capacity was
constructed and dedicated, built between the school building and the current "old church" on the corner of 31st and Irving.

1958. Women granted voting rights in the congregation. Also, School facilities remodeled to provide additional facilities -- A new addition was constructed to connect the school building to the Church building.

May 24, 1959. Chancel Guild starts.

1962. Grand Lake mission starts.

1964. Present Emmaus Quilters group starts to provide quilts, comforters, etc. for shut-ins, nursing homes, World Relief, etc.

July 26, 1970. Chancel cross symbolizing the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ dedicated.

1970. Properties on west side of Irving Street purchased to provide for further development.

July 30, 1972. New Allen digital organ dedicated.

September, 1986. Pre-School/Day Care Center starts.

March, 1997. Emmaus makes its presence on the Internet with a Web site!

June, 2006    Emmaus becomes vacant for the first time in her history when Pastor Schlechte retired

July, 2007    Emmaus celebrates 100 Years
